Roofing Advice That Can Save You A Hassle

Whether you spend hours worrying about your roof, or you don't give much thought to your roof at all, it's important to know how to take care of it. Roof repairs can be costly, and a little maintenance can go a long way. This article will equip you with some essential roofing advice.

Always be safe when you're up on your roof. If you don't know what you're doing, don't go up there! Wear the right safety gear and don't do anything that puts your body at risk. Remember to bring along the right tools for the job as well to ensure you do the work right.

It is the spots which form valleys on your roof which tend to have the most problems. When seeking out the source or a leak or other issues, check these areas first. One improperly laid shingle or a hole torn by a violently installed nail can be the root of your problem.

When installing a new boot on any pipes which leave your roof, make sure they fit as snug as a bug in a rug. If they're even slightly loose, water can seep inside of them, causing you a headache you don't need. Choose the right size to spare yourself from problems down the road.

Carefully check the written estimate that you are given by a professional roofer. Make sure to document when your project starts, the estimation of when it's to be completed, and what payments are made. Avoid paying in full up front. Make sure the warranty is clear and that you understand what voids it.

Find out about roofing warranties from your roofer. Roof replacement and repair can be expensive, so you should always choose a contractor that offers warranties for the work. Professional contractors usually offer full warranties on new roofs or roof replacements, but they may not on repairs. Always get a copy of your warranty when the work is done.

Get free quotes. Roofing prices can vary from roofer to roofer and you want to find out what the different prices are in our area. Be sure, though, that when you get prices you are getting the estimate for the same type of shingles and the same service from the roofer.

When hiring a roofing contractor, be extra cautious of those who won't give you an estimate on paper before the work is started. A reputable contractor should have no problem supplying you with an estimate that details the costs involved and the work to be performed. You should look elsewhere if a contractor website won't agree to supply that information.

When you are using a ladder to climb onto your roof, make sure that you use one that is fitted with a stabilizer. It should also be placed on a surface that is smooth and solid. In the event that you have to place it on grass or soil, dig small pits in the earth in order to steady it.

If you are tackling a roofing project on your own you should lay out your plan before you act. This should include the tools that you will need, the cost that you can afford and the materials that you will need. The worst circumstance is not having what you need when the time comes.

As you can see, roof repair does not have to be a difficult concept. You can easily make repairs to your roof, so do not wait another second. Utilize the excellent advice presented to you in the above article so that you can repair your roof problems and enjoy your home.

3M Circles Back to Science for New Sustainability Building Product

Sustainable Roofing

3M’s stated mission is to use science to help solve global challenges and to improve everyday life. To that end, the company insists it is continually stepping up these efforts, especially when it comes to sustainability.

For example, to help address the climate crisis, 3M introduced its award-winning, smog-reducing granule technology in June 2018—which is now available to asphalt roofing manufacturers.

3M’s smog-reducing granules use a specialized photocatalytic coating, which is activated by ultraviolet sunlight. The smog contacting the roof then turns into water-soluble ions that wash away over time. Testing at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) validated that the granules reduced smog and improved air quality.

The product’s launch, which was decades in the making, dates back to when the granules’ potential for smog reduction caught the attention of a sustainability-minded customer, Malarkey Roofing, back in 2017. The roofing company, which works with Habitat for Humanity, was the first national roofing manufacturer to include these granules in all of their asphalt roofing shingles.

“This is an invention over a 20-year span,” says Lara Ughetta, application engineer specialist in 3M’s Industrial Mineral Products Division. “It finally came to fruition in 2018, but it's the culmination of a lot work by a lot of people.”

3M continues to work with LBNL and the California Air Quality Board to understand the science of its smog-reducing technology and how it might have an impact on air quality for an entire community. And the company says it is actively looking to start a demonstration project in California.
